The Thanksgiving Day 5K Benefiting Martha's Village & Kitchen would not be possible with out the help of our amazing volunteers--and that means YOU! Volunteers provide key support to the thousands of participants as they walk, run or stroll along El Paseo on Thanksgiving morning. Have fun and feel good that your support is helping Martha's Village & Kitchen to help our neighbors in need!  Simply scroll down to see the list of position descriptions and shift times.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • As a general volunteer your will be randomly assigned to an area. If you have a special talent (i.e. photographer, face painter, artist, etc) or need special accommodations please email [email protected]. Start times will vary.

  • -Help participants to check if they are a medal winner for their age category
    -Distribute medals to winners

  • -Help setup and breakdown the Beer Garden area
    -Pour and serve beer
    -Check off race bibs once participants have claimed their one complimentary beer

  • We treasure our fabulous breakdown crew volunteers! In this role, volunteers help ensure the event is welcomed back to El Paseo next year by leaving the streets clean! Please be prepared for walking, bending and lifting (apprx. 40 lbs. with a partner).
    -Help pick up trash, help gather bags of trash from around event
    -Help collapse and stack canopies, tables and chairs, etc.

  • Volunteers in this role will oversee the public gratitude chalkboards.
    - Set up/pack up buckets of chalk for chalkboard
    - Monitor chalkboard area/offer to take photos of guests using their cameras.

  • Be a key player in keeping the excitement and momentum going on the 5K course. Duties include cheering, smiling, giving out high-fives, sign-holding anything to bring out a smile on our runners faces! Standing for long periods of time is required. Wearing festive turkey trot attire is highly encouraged!

  • Volunteers in this role are essential for helping keep the 5K course area organized and safe. Help put course barricades into position according to the course manager. Volunteers should be prepared for lots of walking, standing, lifting course barricade gates with a partner and holding directional signs.

    -Set up the crafts table with provided supplies
    -Encourage children visiting the Kids Zone to come make a Thanksgiving themed craft and help them get started.

    -Paint children's faces using either your own supplies or supplies provided by the event. Come prepared with your own design ideas or go off of provided samples.

  • This position is great for someone who loves promoting, selling and engaging people passing by.
    -Help staff set up the merchandise booth
    -Help promote and sell merchandise (turkey hats, turkey headbands, socks and tutus - all sales support Martha's Village & Kitchen)

    - Help pack up leftover merchandise at the end of the shift.

  • Volunteers in this role should be comfortable using handheld devices (iPods or iPads) to help participants register for the race onsite and help registration staff with miscellaneous tasks. Training will be provided onsite before registration opens.

  • Volunteers in this position will need to walk to and stand at an assigned location to hold signage that helps direct event participants to the event parking garage. You might be the first event volunteers our participants come in contact with, so be sure to wear a welcoming smile!

  • Oversee props for photo booth, engage the crowd to come take their photo and offer to snap photos for guests using their camera. This is a great position for folks who like engaging the crowd passing by.

  • Take photos of the event with your own digital camera on a memory card checked out to you at the start of your shift. Event staff will be in touch with you before the event to confirm the type of memory card your camera requires.

  • Volunteers in this role should be comfortable using handheld devices (iPods or iPads) to help participants who pre-registered for the race check in and receive their race bib numbers. Onsite training will be provided before check-in opens.

  • Volunteers in this role should be prepared for a lot of walking around the event and lifting items up to 25 lbs.
    -Set up cardboard trash cans around Festival Row and the 5K course
    -Help inflate beach balls, set up flatable turkey decor, and with other miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

  • Volunteers in this role help distribute shirts to event participants and help with unpacking items at the start of the shift. Lifting and moving heavy bins (50 lbs.) of shirts and goody bags (with a partner) will be required at times. Standing and bending required to keep merchandise stocked during the rush.

  • Volunteers in this position should love engaging with kids! Help apply or show children how to apply complimentary temporary tattoos, clean up and pack supplies up at the end of the shift.

  • Help keep our VIP Refreshment Table stocked and tidy for our wonderful event sponsors and their guests.

  • Help the Volunteer Coordinator to check in/out our fantastic event volunteers, setup and oversee the volunteer refreshment table, and take on miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

  • This is a great position for folks who love promoting, selling and engaging people passing by. Help staff sell raffle tickets and distribute prizes to winners. All proceeds benefit Martha's Village & Kitchen!

  • -Keep bottled water stocked at the water table located near the finish line, help pass out waters to participants finishing the race.
    - Requires standing and lifting cases of bottled water (30 lbs).
